College Hoops
It’s finally that time of the year: college basketball time! Experts will tell you that the incoming class of freshman this season is the best in the seven years since the inception of the so-called “one and done rule.”
College hoops have been loaded with fresh talent since 2006-2007. There’s already many talented players in the NCAA, including Marcus Smart, Russ Smith, and C.J. Fair just to name a few. Seven of the top 10 scorers from last year are returning.
Jarbari Parker, Andrew Wiggins, and Julius Randle are three of the Freshman that are all possibly going to be lottery draft picks. According to West High basketball player Desmond Gross, “all three players are going to be top 10 picks in NBA draft.”
Wiggins, the projected number one pick of the 2014 draft is already being compared to as the next Lebron James. According to an ESPN article, “If Wiggins can improve his jump shot and fundamentals as he continues to develop, he could be one of the greatest player to play the game.”
Out of all the great players to play at Duke under Mike Krzyzewski, Parker may be the most naturally talented prospect of them all. When asked who is most NBA ready all-around West basketball player Isa Wilson says, “Parker is hands down the best and most ready freshman.” West Girls basketball player Chanel Bookert states, “Parker hands down. He is smooth and a great all-around player. He knows the game of basketball very well.”

Randle’s consistency and efficiency has impressed NBA decision-makers and scouts, according to a Sports Illustrated article. Randle’s averaging a double-double as a freshman. “He is a beast in the paint! He is terrific when it comes to finishing at the basket, and he does a great job drawing contact as well. He also has great footwork around the rim,” says West student, Franklin Bort. When asked who was most NBA ready, body wise, Franklin responded, “Randle, he is a monster in the paint, he is unstoppable down low and great at demanding double team, then finding the open man.”
The question is who is the best freshman? All three are very talented young men who stand out from the rest of the pack. It is going to be a very interesting college basketball season. These players will be criticized and evaluated for the rest of this college basketball season. All eyes are on them. Every mistake, every interview, and every game. Can they live up to the hype, or will they break? Who will separate themselves. Will it be Parker, Wiggins, or Randle ?
Many sports experts agree that these players will be the next big thing. Isa Wilson says, “These players all bring different things to the table, but all three have the potential to be star players in this league and all three may be able to eventually lead their team to a championship, if they keep up the hard work. It’s rare for a draft to have three guys like this.”
